Rick and Morty is so outrageous and unpredictable that you can’t box them into anything – until now. “Rick and Morty: Seasons 1-5” is now available as a Blu-ray Disc boxed set by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.
America’s favorite animated crazy scientist and his grandchildren are the stars of the show: 51 episodes worth. The show started in December 2013 and, with different seasons starting about every two years, the fifth season ended last September, with more in the pipeline.
But, until Season 6 becomes a reality down the road, fans can get their fill of Rick and Morty via this boxed set.
Besides the fabulous episodes, the boxed set contains “Inside the Episode” segments, several featurettes, audio commentary, deleted scenes, animatic sketches, and more.
Other titles
Eat your heart out, “American Graffiti.” Corinth Films has launched a home entertainment line called Drive-In Retro Classics, which feature golden gems of yesteryear. The first effort is “Drive-In Retro Classics: Science Fiction Triple Feature.” We’re talking B-movies from the 1950s: “Rocketship X-M” (1950), “The Brain from Planet Arous” (1957), and “The Hideous Sun Demon” (1958). Don’t squint: That really is Lloyd Bridges starring in “Rocketship X-M.” Corinth Films does the movies right by using the original theatrical elements and packaging the set in great-looking box art.
“Dexter New Blood” (CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Entertainment) arrives in a limited-edition Blu-ray Steelbook that really stands out from the crowd. This four-disc collection features the 10 one-hour episodes, which reunite Michael C. Hall (as Dexter Morgan) with original series showrunner Clyde Phillips. Jennifer Carpenter reprises her role as Dexter’s sister, Deb. The series is set 10 years after a hurricane swept Dexter away. An exclusive 30-minute featurette is well produced.
“For the Love of Money” (Lionsgate) is a new crime drama worth watching. Starring Katt Williams and Keri Hilson, the movie explores a criminal underworld in which a woman left for a better life but got sucked back into. But when this life affects the safety of her daughter, she must choose to surrender or fight. Keith Sweat costars.
It’s great to see MVDvisual armed with some great home entertainment titles of late. One such title is “Monkey Kung Fu,” a 1979 hidden gem of kung fu action with the English dubbed version and the original Cantonese soundtrack. Complete and uncut, the movie involves a prisoner who is given half a wooden keepsake by a one-eyed master; after breaking out of prison, he searches for the other half to discover its purpose. Extensive bonus features created for this release include audio commentary, an interview with the cinematographer, and the original trailer.
“Alain Resnais: Five Short Films” (Icarus Films) speaks for itself by the title alone. Ranging from 13 to 21 minutes, these dynamic, stylistic films follow the distinguished French documentary tradition. “Paul Gauguin” (1949), “Van Gogh” (1948, which features only paintings by Vincent Van Gogh as visuals), “Guernica” (1949), “All the World’s Memory: Toute la Memoire du Monde” (1956, which won the best picture award at the 1957 Cannes Film Festival), and “The Song of Styrene: Le Chant du Styrene” (1957) constitute the Blu-ray.
“The Whaler Boy” (Film Movement) makes its way to DVD after wowing those at the 2020 Venice Film Festival, which awarded the title with a director’s award. The movie involves a teenage whale hunter in an isolated village on the Bering Strait. After the village receives the internet, he communicates with a woman so mysterious that he embarks on a dangerous adventure across the raging waters of the sea to meet this American.
“Sight: The Story of Vision” (IndiePix Films), narrated by music star Elton John, spotlights the research to cure blindness and improve low vision among senior citizens. The film uses compelling examples, including an Iraqi war veteran who has vision loss because of a brain injury and an elderly woman who is also losing her hearing. The movie also touches on the history of eyeglass fashion and of vision-correcting optics.
“On the 3rd Day” (Scream Factory) is a Blu-ray of the 2021 horror/thriller. A woman has difficulties remembering what has happened since a car crash days before in which her child has disappeared from. Suspense builds as she discovers that a religious fanatic may hold the key.
