Oh, the pies.
Did I mention the pies?
Gray Brothers Cafeteria (555 S. Indiana St., Mooresville) knows how to sweeten customer visits with end-of-the-meal pies. Its pies are a better closer than Major League Baseball all-time saves leader Mariano Rivera.
There’s strawberry, butterscotch, cherry, raisin, peanut butter and chocolate — oh, my. And we’re just getting started.
Of course, Gray Brothers is more than that. Since 1969, they have been serving cafeteria-style comfort food such as fried chicken, meatloaf, beef noodles and chicken noodles.
The flaky, golden, thin breading of the fried chicken was undeniable, but what lied underneath was even better — moist, tender meat.
The beef noodles featured small beef chunks with a thick broth and tender homemade country noodles.
Sides include winners such as mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, and macaroni and cheese.
The 700-seat restaurant keeps packing them in, but there is a large space with a separate entrance in which customers can order takeout, including the desserts.
Speaking of which, go for the butterscotch pie. The dreamy, creamy concoction is reminiscent of pudding with the unusual twist of meringue topping. The gooey peanut butter pie melted in my mouth. And the acclaimed strawberry pie included large ripe-red strawberries (impressive for this time of year) with a compelling glaze and whipped cream.
The pies feature a sweet, shortbread-like crust. They’re a slice of heaven.
