‘Extinction’ comes to life on DVD

After gaining fame for his 2010 home-invasion thriller “Kidnapped,” Spanish filmmaker Miguel Angel Vivas has answered with his first English-language movie, “Extinction.”

DVD ExtinctionOne-word movie titles must work for Vivas, because “Extinction” (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment) works sublimely as a zombie thriller extraordinaire.

Matthew Fox and Jeffrey Donovan pair up as former friends who must put their differences aside because they are survivors of a zombie apocalypse. They must team up to outlast a second attempt on their lives after nine years of shutting themselves off in a snowbound town.

Bonus features include a making-of special and visual effects progression reel.

“Felt” (Anchor Bay Entertainment) focuses on a woman attempting to cope with past sexual trauma; she tries to escape her scars by creating grotesquely costumed alter-egos.

Appropriately timed with the 70th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day (signed on the USS Missouri at Pearl Harbor), “Hawaii Five-O: The Fifth Season” (CBS Home Entertainment) comes to DVD full of a shipload of bonus features.

“The Vampire Diaries” (Warner Bros. Home Entertainment) rolls out its sixth season on Blu-ray with all 22 one-hour episodes, a “Good Bite and Good Luck” featurette that features final farewells, as well as bonuses of fan homages, commentary and more.

“Mad Max: Fury Road” (Warner) hardly feels like a well-worn fourth film in the franchise. Its freshness and exuberance abounds in an exciting film that plays just as well on Blu-ray as it did in the theaters. Charlize Theron stars in this heart-pounding adventure. Bonus features include a making-of and “Crash & Smath” feturetttes. Also, for hardcore fans, “Mad Max 4-Film Blu-ray Anthology” is available.

“The Blood Lands” (Magnolia Home Entertainment) changes tunes quickly when an idyllic life of a couple in a charming cottage in the Scottish countryside is turned upside-down by a sinister game of cat and mouse.

It was after a performance at Carmel’s Palladium that Glen Campbell’s revelation that he has Alzheimer’s came out. Now, Virgil Films releases “Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me” on DVD. The documentary showcases the country/pop superstar’s amazing journey as he and his family attempt to navigate his progressing disease. Appearances by Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, The Edge, Keith Urban, Sheryl Crow, Steve Martin, Taylor Swift and others make this a must-have DVD.

In “Lords of London” (Lionsgate), a London gangsters must confront the past of his notoriously ruthless father in order to alter his own out-of-control life.

Queen Latifah stars in “Bessie” (HBO Home Entertainment), an intimate look at the determined 1920s blues singer Bessie Smith.

Long out of print, “Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume One” (Shout! Factory) is back on the shelves. So, go forth and experience the adventures of Joel, Mike and their robot sidekicks.
