‘Primal’ is prime example of great animation

What’s old is new. Actually, what’s prehistoric is new.

“Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal: The Complete Second Season” is proof of that concept.

The Blu-ray of Season 2 has been released by Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment. The Blu-ray contains all 10 episodes of the popular Cartoon Network Studios series about an evolutionary-period caveman and his dinosaur friend.

What’s not to like about Spear and Fang, whose dinosaur species is nearly extinct? They have rescued Mira from captors but then find out how brutal the place is. Three titanic episodes, The Colossaeus Parts 1-3, center on huge warship battles.

Fans will appreciate a brilliant new featurette, “Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal: Inside the Evolution” special feature. This inside look at the Emmy Award-winning show spotlights Tartakovsky and the creative team, illuminating the inspiration behind Season 2 and how Fang was inspired by, of all things, a four-legged friend!

Other titles

Director and screenwriter Joseph W. Sarno gets double the love in Film Movement Classics’ Blu-ray double feature of “Moonlighting Wives” and “Naked Fog.” These 1966 films are in stark contrast to each other, color-wise, but not plot-wise or cast-wise. “Moonlighting Wives,” presented in phenomenally colored film, examines a thriving prostitution ring in suburbia under the guise of a stenography service. “The Naked Fog,” filmed in black and white and not nearly as popular as “Moonlighting Wives” but a gem in its own way, centers on a brothel helping a writer overcoming writer’s block. Tammy LaTour stars in both films. Interviews and a commentary highlight the bonus features.

“Pilgrimage: The Voyages of Fernao Mendes Pinto” (IndiePix Films) details the 16th-century explorer’s legendary journeys at sea and on land. He was shipwrecked and taken prisoner several times. He was one of the first Europeans to visit Japan and even served a year of hard labor on the Great Wall of China. His controversial memoir, “The Travels of Mendes Pinto,” was posthumously published in 1614.

“New Gods: Yang Jian” (GKids) is out on a Blu-ray plus DVD pack, which enables fans to enjoy the epic animated action fantasy steeped in Chinese mythology in its original Mandarin language version as well as an all-new English language dub. A generous number of bonus features and an 11×18 limited-edition poster are included.
