Lively comes alive in ‘Adaline’

Blake Lively puts on the performance of a lifetime in “The Age of Adaline” (Lionsgate) and that’s reason enough to watch the sweeping romantic film.

Age of AdalineLively may be in the prime of her life in this film, but her character is always in her prime — as a 29-year-old who never ages. Adaline, you see, survives a near-death experience, and from that day on she never ages.

Because of the situation, she must guard her secret, but also her heart. Eight decades go by before it all changes in this story of a timeless romance.

Harrison Ford and Kathy Baker give strong performances to support Lively’s captivating, defining role. Michiel Huisman also adds to the romance as a charming philanthropist.

Special features include a director’s commentary, deleted scenes and three featurettes: “A Love Story for the Ages,” “Style Throughout the Ages” and “Discovering Young Harrison Ford: Anthony Ingruber, an Online Sensation.”

More romance

“Queen and Country” (BBC Worldwide North America) is director John Boorman’s final film after a 50-year career — a sequel to the five-time Academy Award-nominated “Hope and Glory.”

The film is moving, yet funny, and follows a young man coming of age at the dawn of the Korean War.

TV titles

“Yu-Gi-Oh: 5Ds Season 2” (Cinedigm) is available for the first time as a boxed set that contains all 59 half-hour episodes of Season 2. That’s because the series first aired in North America with rebroadcasts on Cartoon Network.

“Gotham” The Complete First Season” (Warner Bros. Home Entertainment) contains nearly two hours of extras, including new featurettes, unaired scenes and a gag reel. The show follows the rise of Commissioner Gordon through a corrupt city, while also chronicling the genesis of the you-know-who superhero.

While not really a TV series, “Counting on Birds: Tales of Migration” (PBS Distribution) combines five programs onto two discs for 300 minutes of entertainment regarding following the flights of New England’s migratory birds. Host Willem Lange travels around North and South America and meets the bird enthusiasts and experts who track and protect them.
