‘Young Sheldon’ never gets old

While channel surfing, I always stop skipping whenever “Young Sheldon” appears on the screen. The comedy speaks to me. It’s sweet, wickedly smart, well-acted, and extremely funny.

Fans must be cheering now that “Young Sheldon: The Complete Fifth Season” (Warner Bros. Home Entertainment) is now available on Blu-ray Disc and DVD.

Young Sheldon

The series, set in the late 1980s in East Texas, follows the travails of Sheldon Cooper as a boy. Of course, Sheldon Cooper is the main character in “The Big Bang Theory,” and actor Jim Parsons actually provides narration for “Young Sheldon.”

School is a breeze for Sheldon. Not grade school, but high school – six years ahead of time. And then college. Gifted, yes. But naïve and vulnerable. And sassy.

Season 5 is from 2021-2022 and includes 22 high-quality episodes. It starts with Sheldon and his sister, Missy, running way from home. The middle of the season sees Sheldon hanging with college dorm neighbors (what could go wrong?). The season finale involves Sheldon’s worries about entering puberty and his parents trying to find new jobs.

An entertaining bonus feature, “Time Flies When You’re Having Fun: Young Sheldon at 100,” looks at the first five years and 100 episodes with the cast. The featurette delves into how the family, both on the show and as an ensemble in real life, have grown into global sensations like the show itself. In the featurette, the cast talks about their favorite memories, shows, and more.
